Beautifully illustrated book about bugs

I just love children’s books! Although I do read adult literature, I just can’t resist looking at children’s books which have such wonderful illustrations.

I find children’s books fun and I’m drawn to their playful compositions, colours and quirky characters. I also love studying each illustrator’s ‘drawing style’ and how the images relate to the text. This is actually a bit of a balancing act, because the images have to support what the text is saying. Whatever the intended purpose, the images must be engaging to the audience or they won’t deliver. I could go on about this, explaining the psychology of children’s books.  It is a large subject area and I have plans to write about it in a future post.

Whilst browsing in Waterstones, I came across a beautifully illustrated book about bugs. The research was for a MATS bootcamp project I was working on, for a children’s book illustration. I was searching for some inspiration and also doing a bit of personal research into the market, when I stumbled across The Big Book Bugs by Yuval Zommer. The illustrations in this book are amazing!

This book is eye-catching and fascinating. It’s absolutely packed full of interesting facts relating to all sorts of bugs, ranging from bees and beetles to centipedes. It’s also an activity book, where the audience gets to identify different types of bugs. Perfect for any young bug lovers or even children who aren’t particularly keen on creepy crawlers, I’m sure if they took a look at this book, they soon will be!

Look at how beautiful the illustrations are! I love how the colourful bugs and props stand out against the pale background. The colour palette is lush. In the image above, I love how the bees have beaming smiles. They appear so sweet and friendly, with bags of personality.  Were any of the young readers wary or even scared of bugs, then this may help them to get over that fear.

Yuval uses a range of interesting compositions in the book. Here’s another prime example in the image above. Your eyes are drawn to the centre of the opened book, then to the outer pages, where the bugs are crawling along.

I love Yuval’s contemporary style and the variety of textures in his creatures. The clouds are great in this one, and just look at those exquisite leaves and flowers!

I think this is the only page with a dark background in the whole book. Look how the butterflies are still clearly seen against a black backdrop. So beautiful!!

Do you like Yuval’s beautifully illustrated book about bugs, as much as I do? I’m so inspired and would definitely consider writing and illustrating a children’s book of my own one day.
