Competition with Gorman

I love entering competitions and haven’t entered one for some time. The last competition I did was for Sock It To Me, back in October 2019.

So, when I saw that Gorman Clothing were hosting a contest to create a design for a capsule collection, I just had to have a go! I’ve been a huge fan of theirs and had always imagined having my own designs printed and made up into garments – a dream of mine for sure!

Competition with Gorman

I wanted my designs to fit in perfectly and perhaps offer something new to what Gorman currnetly have in their collections. I knew my design would need a modern feel and perhaps be a little abstract. I haven’t done any abstract work for some time, so I knew I’d have to prepare myself, which always means a number of trials and errors. As it turned out, there are many types of abstract styles and through experiments, I realised I feel comfortable creating shapes with different types of textures. I tried to produce pieces that felt like ‘me’ with a mix of freedom and a certain amount of control.

Here’s my final submission entry for the Gorman Clothing competition. I thought it would be fun to design a pattern based on sweet treats. Who doesn’t love ice-cream, lollies, cake and jelly!

Here are some initial drawings that I’d like to share with you. I tend to just let my mind go with the flow and initially didn’t really have an idea in mind. I find I work better this way; to just see what happens.

At first, I liked the idea of drawing animals with palm trees, grass and geometrical shapes. I tend to draw animals so it was a good start for me. This progressed to sweet treats, mainly because after drawing quite a few animals I wanted to try something different. Desserts or puddings are favoured by many adults and children, so my final design could possibly work for different age groups.

Altogether, there were over 3000 entries! If you like my design and would like to vote for me, click the link, go to J – for Jayne (names are in alphabetical order). Voting will close at 11:59 pm EST (4:59 am BST) on the 14th June.

There are many beautifully and creative designs submitted, however fingers (and tootsies) crossed my design will get selected! πŸ™‚
