Floral pattern designs
It’s been a few months since I participated on a course, so I thought I’d join September’s FolioFocus group. FolioFocus is a ten week, portfolio building challenge and in the first week, we created floral pattern designs. I designed two apparel patterns, which would look equally as good on stationery, gift-wrap, or on virtually anything!
I was inspired by floral embellished fashion garments (a top trend at the moment for autumn/winter 2016/17) and I decided to combine watercolour flowers with a fashion accessory, such as a brooch. First, I painted the flowers and then I scanned in a few brooches that I had in my jewellery box. I then placed these into one of my designs, using PhotoShop.
Floral pattern designs
Here are my initial floral doodles. I concentrated on shape, lines and texture.
This is my first design. As you can see, the main colours are pinks, orange, greens and blues, with a few yellow and lilac shades. I tried different background variations but the colours looked the best with a white background.
This is my second design, which has the arrangement of fashion brooches. The colours look much softer and younger in this design. I placed the elements on a warm, neutral background, which has helped to make it very feminine and with the collage brooch motifs, a bit quirky.
At some point in between projects, I will develop these patterns and place them onto different props; gift-wrap, gift bags, bedding and so on.
